Zack Brown wins CALS Dean’s Enrichment Grant Award
Congratulations to CEnREP affiliate faculty and assistant professor of agricultural and resource economics Zack Brown, who, along with Co-PI Fred Gould, William Neal Reynolds professor of entomology, was recently awarded a College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Dean’s Enrichment grant. Their proposal, “Envisioning Future Leaders of Genetic Engineering in Society: A Symposium for a Next-Generation Research Training Program” was awarded $18,225.
Faculty members across ten CALS departments and two research stations submitted proposals this year in collaboration with other colleges and external private and public sector stakeholders. Faculty participation ranged from recently hired assistant professors to distinguished senior professors and addressed all aspects of the land grant mission; teaching, research, and extension. An abstract of Zack’s proposal follows.
As innovation in agricultural biotechnology surges ahead, there has never been a greater gap between scientists and the general public in opinions and beliefs about the use of biotechnology in agriculture and other resource systems. Prior interdisciplinary graduate education programs at NC State have made progress in bridging this gulf, but much remains to be done. This symposium will bring together highly respected individuals with experiences in related interdisciplinary programs as well as key NCSU and external partners. Within the agenda of the symposium, participants will work with current students, alumni, and faculty in the Genetic Engineering & Society (GES) Center, to craft a vision and plan for training the next generation of interdisciplinary graduates and professionals.
