Richard Manner is participating in the Young Scientist Summer Program (YSSP) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria (just south of Vienna). PhD students from around the world apply to the program with an original research proposal. Those selected are invited to IIASA for 3 months over the summer and are mentored by institute staff as they work through their proposal. Richard’s research proposal included transplanting the pySRTS model to the European Union (EU), starting with EU data collection and cleaning, with the ultimate goal of modeling the economic and ecological ramifications of EU level forest-related policies. The current research is investigating the impact of shifting forest species compositions, to be more climate resilient, on roundwood prices and forest inventory, removals, and growth. Richard is in the home stretch of the research, currently focused on the curating model projections and writing up results.
